The Two Main Route Options
Option 1 — The A7 Motorway (Fast and Efficient)
Agadir → Marrakech via the A7: the most direct route, fully paved and well maintained. Toll approximately 60 MAD. Ideal if you're travelling with young children, short on time, or arriving in the evening.
Worth noting: even on the motorway, crossing the Souss plains and the first Atlas foothills offers beautiful scenery.
Option 2 — The N8 Road via Taroudant (Scenic and Memorable)
This is our favourite route for a truly memorable road trip:
1. Agadir → Taroudant (80 km, 1h) — First stop in the fortified medina 2. Taroudant → North via Imi n'Tanoute — Climbing through the western High Atlas 3. Imi n'Tanoute → Marrakech (90 km, 1h15) — Descent onto the Haouz plain

Must-See Stops on the Road Trip
Taroudant (1 hour from Agadir)
The Taroudant medina is a compulsory stop. Wander through the souks, taste local pastilla and admire the ramparts from one of the horse-drawn carriages that circle the walls. Allow at least 1.5 hours.
The Argan Forest (between Agadir and Taroudant)
The N10 road crosses the argan tree forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Stop at a women's cooperative to buy genuine argan oil — one of the most authentic souvenirs Morocco has to offer.
The Tichka Pass (Ouarzazate variant)
If you take the detour via Ouarzazate, the Tichka Pass (2,260 m) is one of the journey's highlights. Pull over at the viewpoints to photograph the snow-capped Atlas peaks.
Imi n'Tanoute (northern return route)
This small mountain town is a good lunch stop. Local restaurants serve a home-cooked tagine at very reasonable prices.

Practical Driving Tips for Morocco
- Road rules: similar to European standards, but watch out for unmarked speed bumps and livestock on rural roads
- Speed limits: 120 km/h on motorway, 100 km/h outside built-up areas, 60 km/h in town
- Fuel: fill up in Agadir before departure, especially if taking the mountain route
- GPS and signal: download offline maps — mobile coverage is patchy in the mountains
- Departure time: leave between 7 and 9 AM to enjoy the morning light and reach Marrakech before evening traffic

Which Vehicle for This Road Trip?
- A7 Motorway: an economy saloon (Dacia Logan, Renault Clio) is more than adequate
- N8 Scenic Route via Taroudant: same — all roads are paved
- Tichka variant / off-road sections: an SUV (Dacia Duster, Hyundai Tucson) gives added comfort and peace of mind
